AADOCR P&G Underrepresented Faculty Research Fellowship

The goal of this fellowship is to support researchers from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups at the early stages of their scientific careers and to increase representation of these underrepresented groups at the faculty level in science and academia. Recipients will receive $10,000 that must be put towards their post-doctoral research, establishment of their laboratories, the completion of a research project or preparing research for publication or grant submission.

hold a DDS/DMD and/or Ph.D., or equivalent advanced degree

Applicants must:
- be an AADOCR member at the time of application,
- belong to an underrepresented racial or ethnic group as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF considers Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders to be underrepresented in biomedical research relative to the noninstitutionalized resident population of the United States.
- be within 10 years of their last professional degree/terminal degree,
- have demonstrated a commitment to a research career as well as academic promise, which will be evaluated based on the candidate’s CV, project and the support demonstrated in the supervisor/department head letter,
- hold a DDS/DMD and/or Ph.D., or equivalent advanced degree, and
- hold an appointment at the post-doctoral, instructor, assistant professor level or equivalent at an accredited dental school or academic research center in the United States.
AADOCR members can apply for this and the Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship but cannot receive both. Applicants may apply for this award multiple times during the years in which applicants are eligible, but applicants may only receive the award one time. As part of the terms of the fellowship, the award recipient must submit a report within 12 months of receipt of the award which describes the results of the progress achieved as a result of the fellowship.
The application includes the following and can be uploaded to the application site as separate documents:
- a letter of support from the applicant’s research supervisor or department chair (not more than one page)
- an outline of the candidate’s career plan (not more than 4 pages), 11 pt. font, including a career development plan and a description of how the fellowship will affect future research to be conducted by the applicant
- a project description (not to exceed two pages), excluding references, and should include hypothesis, methodology, plans for publications/presentations and a realistic timeline for the project
- a personal statement, indicating why the candidate should be considered for the fellowship (not more than two pages)
- the candidate’s CV or biosketch (not more than five pages)
- budget and budget justification demonstrating how the $10,000 will be spent. No indirect costs (F&A) shall be allowed (see ‘Award’ Section below for more information.)
The purpose of this award is to assist the awardee with 1) generating data, 2) obtaining research training or 3) traveling to a professional meeting or career development event to present data/or establish external mentorship or collaboration. Applicants will be evaluated by the AADOCR Committee on Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) on the basis of the candidate’s CV, research project, proposed use of the award funds and the support demonstrated in the supervisor/department head letter. The CDI will evaluate the candidate on the basis of the candidates' 1) academic credentials; 2) quality of career development plan; 3) commitment to research career and academic promise; and 4) quality and completeness of stated project goals and potential to advance Field. The CDI will evaluate that the proposed research project has the potential to advance the chosen field of the applicant and the degree to which the career development plan supports the applicant's completion of the project and/or related professional growth. The applicant should propose reasonable aims that can be accomplished with the award amount and the applicant’s other current or expected financial support in the 12 months after receipt of the award and explain how this award will significantly contribute to the accomplishment of the applicant’s research project and/or advance their research career.
One Fellowship in the amount of $10,000 will be made. Funds awarded can be used for additional research assistance, e.g. to purchase research supplies, equipment, or software, or to compensate for research subjects for human studies, etc.; salary support for the applicant or research personnel; etc. Funds may also be used for travel to conferences and meetings to present data and to engage in professional development and networking opportunities, but the majority of the award should be used to support research activities. This award will be made to the institution (if applicable) and no indirect costs (F&A) shall be allowed.
