Alexandria, Va., USA – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) announced Sylvia Frazier-Bowers, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as the 2021 recipient of the AADR National Student Research Group (NSRG) Mentor Award. Frazier-Bowers was recognized at the AADR SRG Faculty Advisor and SRG Representative Meeting on July 14, 2021, which is part of the virtual 50th Annual Meeting of the AADR, held in conjunction with the 99th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). Frazier-Bowers is the first African-American scientist to receive this award.
Frazier-Bowers is an Associate Professor of Orthodontics and the Assistant Dean, Inclusive Excellence and Equity Initiatives at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry. She received a B.A. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a B.S. and D.D.S. from the University of Illinois, Chicago. After completing the NIH Dentist-Scientist Program at UNC-CH in Orthodontics (certificate) and her Ph.D. in genetics and molecular biology she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston in the department of orthodontics.
Frazier-Bowers is a member of the AADR Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and has served as president of the IADR Craniofacial Biology Group and as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Dental Research. As a clinician-scientist, Frazier-Bowers aims to bridge the gap between the clinical profession and scientific advances to provide a foundation for future generations of dentists. Frazier-Bowers’ current research efforts broadly focus on gene discovery and phenotype dissection of dentofacial variation specifically Class III malocclusion, tooth eruption and root development using multiple translational methods.
In 1997, the AADR National Student Research Group (NSRG) initiated the NSRG Mentor Award. This award was established in order to provide national recognition for outstanding faculty mentors. The recipient of the NSRG Mentor Award receives a plaque and is the guest speaker at the annual SRG Faculty Advisors’/SRG Presidents' event during the AADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition.
