Injectable Antimicrobial Scaffolding for Periodontitis Biofilm Prevention and Treatment

Alexandria, VA – A study exploring the potential of an injectable hydrogel scaffold as a possible alternative method for removing biofilm buildup under the gumline for periodontitis was presented at the 54th Annual Meeting of the AADOCR, which was held in conjunction with the 49th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 12-15, 2025 in New York, NY.

The abstract, “Injectable Antimicrobial Scaffolding for Periodontitis Biofilm Prevention and Treatment” was presented by Alexandra Griffith of the New Jersey Institute of Technology during the “Optimizing Treatment Responses” Oral Session that took place on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 8 a.m. EDT (UTC-4).

Removing biofilm buildup under the gumline for periodontitis is invasive and painful. A possible alternative is an injectable hydrogel scaffold which would act both as a scaffold for tissue regeneration and healing as well as having tunable antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties specific to the microorganisms associated with periodontitis.

The in vitro results of the study indicated that AMP prevents periodontal microbes from adhering to surfaces and forming pathogenic biofilms. When paired with the tissue regeneration seen in vivo, the results indicated that the scaffold holds potential as an injectable treatment for treating and reversing damage caused by periodontitis.
